Synopsis
Renowned British actress Dame Margaret Natalie Smith CH DBE, celebrated for her sharp wit in both comedic and dramatic roles, has left an incredible legacy. A career spanning over seven decades across stage and screen, she became one of Britain’s most prolific and recognisable performers with works such as her Oscar winning performance in THE PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE along with appearances in the HARRY POTTER and DOWNTOWN ABBEY series leaving an indelible mark on generations of viewers. One such key work in Dame Maggie’s filmography is James Ivory’s A ROOM WITH A VIEW, based on E.M. Forster’s 1908 novel. The story follows Lucy Honeychurch, a young Englishwoman on a tour of Florence with her cousin and chaperone, Charlotte Bartlett. Upon meeting the unconventional George Emerson and his father, Lucy experiences a series of events that challenge her societal expectations. Receiving critical acclaim and winning three Academy Awards, the film is celebrated as one of the key works in the Merchant Ivory and is being screened as a tribute to Dame Maggie Smith.
Awards & Reviews
“The performances -- particularly by Maggie Smith, Helena Bonham Carter and Denholm Elliot -- are superbly wrought in this tale of conflicting cultures, embattled sexes and changing values.”
