Synopsis

Saoirse Ronan both produces and stars in this poignant adaptation about a recovering addict who returns to her childhood home on Scotland’s Orkney Islands. Seeking refuge from the temptations of her past after completing rehab, Rona (Ronan) leaves London to reconnect with her remote hometown. There, she navigates the complexities of her religious mother and a father with bipolar disorder, all while grappling with her own search for peace and identity. Flashbacks of her alcohol-fueled decline, a doomed relationship (Paapa Essiedu, I MAY DESTROY YOU), and her time in the ward intrude upon her present as she finds her way back to sobriety, guided by the rugged beauty of the Orkney Islands and its surrounding wildlife. Adapted from journalist Amy Liptrot's memoir, this nonlinear journey captures the struggle of coming back from the brink. Directed by Nora Fingscheidt, known for exploring characters battling inner demons, the film showcases Ronan's widely acclaimed performance, embodying Rona's determination and resilience throughout her transformative journey.
